Our Story

Originally from Llangollen in North Wales, Lara started her business in February 2014 to make some pennies whilst studying at the University of Hull. She fell hard and fast for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and the wonders it could create and so Lara set up as Roberts' Vintage Home painting small home decor items.

After graduating, she moved into a workshop space in Hull Microfirms Centre where she spent five years painting and restoring hundreds of pieces of furniture. Things really started to take flight after having her application to be an Annie Sloan stockist approved in Spring 2018 and began to offer the official Chalk Paint classes.

Humber street

In June 2019, she moved to Humber Street in Hull's Fruit Market. The business became Plant & Paint to account for the fact her green fingered hobby had firmly crept its way into the shop. After rapid success, Plant & Paint is now Hull's hub for houseplant enthusiasts. The shop stocks hundreds of indoor plants including a range of rare plants and all the plantware you could need from your favourite brands across the UK and Europe. There were even calls for a membership club which Lara answered with the Green Card for the ultimate plant addicts.

Continuing to grow, even during three national lockdowns (with the help of Fern the van), in July 2021 Lara made her first hire and Ema joined the team. Hull through and through, a graduate of Fine Art & Design and a self-confessed houseplant addict, Ema was the perfect hire. You will probably find Ema in the workshop area of the shop building a terrarium (most likely wearing one of the hundreds of pairs of funky dungarees she owns!)

Lara & Ema

Workshops are still a big part of the shop with weekly classes taught by Lara, Ema, and local guest teachers. The Annie Sloan classes still run in the same way as they started as part of a larger programme of plant themed workshops.

Plant & Paint is now firmly rooted in the vibrant Hull indie scene with an amazing family of customers and the best neighbours anyone could ask for. Lara and Ema have no intentions of slowing down with lots of exciting events and growth planned for 2022!
